Great post! It's nice to see someone else's process for auditing a site. I'm basically on step two of auditing my own site right now and I want to reiterate how important it is to audit your site regularly. I'm amazed at how much the keywords that people use for various things evolve over the years.

I haven't done an audit for a couple of years and I'm finding that many of the keywords I originally optimized for now get much less traffic than they did when I last optimized the site. New keywords have now taken become more highly searched than they were back then.

I would highly recommend that people audit their sites regularly to stay on top of what their market is really searching for.

One thing I noticed missing from your post was the mention of CSS. When redesigning or recoding your template you should absolutely make sure your template is in a Pure CSS design to cut down on your code to content ratio while bringing your content higher up in your document. Cheers.

After nearly 2 years working for a new company that previously did not offer SEO, they have finally started to realise that solid SEO is foundational - not some sort of plug-in afterthought.

Sphunn for a great summary.

Was having this conversation too with some collogues and was trying to get across how much easier it is to optimise a site before its built rather than during.

You could tell them that I did a site audit on a national real estate web site some years ago and pointed out some very important issues with their content management system that were hurting search results, such as no control over HTML Titles, limited ability to moodily the content on the page. They said they wouldn’t be able to fix those issues until they made a major overhaul for the site

I checked a few years later. Still the same!

Great post. It is funny. I was just having this conversation about a SEO audit with a customer today. They were thinking that it should be after the site was reconstructed. I little redirection in thought process i had to do.
