SEO Basics: What was important in 2000 is still important in 2009February 16th, 2009 by George Aspland |
Mark Jackson posted an article at Search Engine Watch that’s a good reminder that what was important for search engine optimization in 2000 is still important in 2009:
- A web site full of pages featuring great/relevant content.
- A search engine friendly site structure.
- Links to your site from relevant web sites.

Interesting article. I appreciate his focus on what I feel has long been the Achilles Heel of SEO: the fixation on SEO for SEO’s sake.
While many SEOs bemoan things like personalized search and other features that make rankings less uniform, I welcome them.
It lowers the incentive for businesses to try to “trick” the search engines into providing better rankings and raises incentives for them to focus on more important metrics than simply rankings.
Rankings are a means to an end. The more they are used to build traffic that converts instead of merely rankings taken in isolation, the more valuable SEO will be.
